Quotes by Yangtang Rinpoche

Although innocent, he was imprisoned for 22 years by the Chinese Communists. He never had resentment, only compassion.

...

Because of the Dharma, my mind was more free in prison than worldly people experience in the best of circumstances.

...

The realization of the nature of emptiness within which effortless compassion arises like heat arising from fire. Compassion is inherent in emptiness as an innate quality, and if one has realized emptiness it is simply impossible that compassion would not be there.

...

We are practicing Dharma as we are happily embracing the eight worldly concerns. But it is taught that such practice is not authentic Dharma, and it will not lead us to liberation.

...

What is the best wisdom? It is not to cling to anything whatsoever to be truly, inherently existent. It is to be without clinging to anything, including outer container-like universe, and the content-like sentient beings, stating that "This is this!" or "That is that!" or "This is enemy" and so on.

Everything is nothing but name. Isn't it? Form, sound, smell, and so on, we have to know that all these things are nothing but names, and that they do not truly, inherently exist. Also "I" or "Yangthang Tulku", these are nothing but names. I am actually not "Yangthang Tulku", as "Yangthang Tulku" is nothing but a name.

We should make the distinction between a thing and a name we label on that thing. It is not alright to see the thing and the name as identical. We need to understand that all phenomena do not really exist in this way — as they are nothing but names.

...

Looking outwards will bring continual delusion for your mind. But looking within, you will experience its nature.

...

Sentient beings are limitless. Therefore if we cultivate bodhicitta by relying on the understanding that there are limitless sentient beings, our cultivation of bodhicitta becomes limitless too. The authentic cultivation of limitless bodhicitta is accomplished that way.

Then if our cultivation of bodhicitta is limitless, it goes without saying that the benefits would be limitless too. But the problem is that we do not fully understand that sentient beings really are limitless.

We may talk about "all old-mother-like sentient beings who are equal to space", but nobody seems to fully understand just how vast the universe actually is. And no one seems to know that it is pervaded by sentient beings. Some scientists even say that there are no inhabited worlds except planet earth. But such a perspective is too narrow! It is like only seeing the eye of a needle!

...

When we are having happy moments, when we are enjoying our wealth and pleasure, we might just want to remain in that state, and we might not even think about practicing dharma. Therefore, sometimes the best inspiration for dharma practice is actually meeting with enemies, illness, and other such things that might make us suffer.

...

Now that you've gained the support of a human life, so hard to find,
Aroused a mind of renunciation, so difficult to develop,
Met an authentic master, so rarely encountered,
And taken up the sacred Dharma, so scarcely discovered,
Reflect, over and again, on the difficulty of finding
Such a physical support providing all the right conditions for practice.
If you fail to make use of the full human potential you now possess,
Which is impermanent like a candle in the wind,
Don't think that you can rely on it for a long time to come.
At death and in the bardos, lacking the confidence of liberation,
How frightening will be the next life’s sufferings!
When we must wander endlessly in samsara,
How distressing it is to contemplate its nature!
Whatever you can do to gain real confidence in this life,
I, for one, will be most grateful!
This is what I hope for you
