Periphyseon on the Division of Nature
Hints from amazon comments are sometimes exceedingly helpful. // "This book was published in 1976 before the increased attention that Eriugena is receiving today. It is problematical for two reasons. First, Uhfelder and Potter ask the reader to accept the limited selections from the full text which they deem important. And second, it does not use the normal division of text numbers which make citation easy. The complete text in English translation (Sheldon-Williams and Omeara) was published in 1987 by Dumbarton Oaks and is today a very rare book. The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies has been slowly issuing the Periphyseon in five volumes, in both Latin and English four of which are in print and the fifth is in process. Quite inexpensive through them. New and second hand book dealers want up to three times as much."

Emily Wilson: Translator's Note to The Odyssey
When I was eight years old, my primary school put on a production of a (much-shortened) Odyssey, complete with costumes, song, and dance. The play starred the cute troublemaker in my class as Odysseus, the headmaster of the school as Polyphemus (the one-eyed monster outwitted by his tiny opponents),...

The Left-Handed Kid
Nominally a book that covers the rough century between the invention of the telegraph in the 1840s and that of computing in the 1950s, The Chinese Typewriter is secretly a history of translation and empire, written language and modernity, misguided struggle and brutal intellectual defeat.

The Books And Music That Shaped Steve Jobs
I like living at the intersection of the humanities and technology, LSD, Bauhaus and Zen Buddhism shaped Apple's pioneering products as much as anything that took place on the assembly lines. They were among Jobs' greatest influences and they shaped his attitudes toward design, business and innovation. // TL;DR: Jobs read Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism, by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche.

Mudra: Early Poems and Songs
A mudra is a symbolic gesture or action that gives physical expression to an inner state. This book of poetry and songs of devotion, written by Chögyam Trungpa between 1959 and 1971, is spontaneous and celebratory. This volume also includes the ten traditional Zen oxherding pictures accompanied by a unique commentary that offers an unmistakably Tibetan flavor. Fans of this renowned teacher will enjoy the heartfelt devotional quality of this early work.

Why Exactly is This Book Obscene?
Plenty of books have been banned or censored over the years—and even more attempts have been made to ban and censor them. But I’ve always wondered exactly what these books were brought to trial for. “Obscenity,” after all, is a pretty wide field. It’s obscene, the number of things I’ve called obscene. So what was it? A certain number of bad words? General sexiness? A queasy feeling in the gut by a well-connected reader? I tracked down a few answers for famous books deemed (by some) obscene. Mostly, it’s about bad words—but sometimes it’s also communism!
